The Castillo de La Calahorra in Granada, location of a famous 1970s film
THE Castillo de La Calahorra is located on a hill in the province of Granada and was the location used in a famous David Essex film in the 1970s
If you are traveling in the Granada province, and go to La Calahorra, then you simply cannot miss the spectacular Castillo de La Calahorra, set on the hillside with the magnificent backdrop of the Sierra Nevada foothills of the beautiful region of Andalusia in southern Spain.
Built between 1509 and 1512, this magnificent old castle has been declared Of Cultural Interests historic monument in 1922, and was one of the first Italian Renaissance castles to be built outside of Italy.
If you are a movie buff, you may have recognized the castle as it appeared in the 1974 film. Stardust – the sequel to the hit Essex movie “That’ll Be The Day” – like the retreat bought by famous pop star “Jim MacLaine” – played by David essex – in the last parts of the film, also with Adam Faith and Larry Hagman.
The film continues the story that began in the first one, where Jim MacLaine went from working at a funfair in the 1960s to forming a band called The Stray Cats, who at the end of the film, is on the verge of becoming a pop celebrity.
Adam Faith plays Mike Menary who will become MacLaine’s manager in Stardust, giving a powerful and truly stealing performance from the film’s main character in my opinion, as we watch him face MacLaine’s newfound fame as they strike. the 1970s, declining into a drug addict recluse, living in the Castillo de La Calahorra.
It would be a shame if you went to visit this castle, not to make it a day and also drive up to the Sierra Nevada – in English the name means “a mountain range covered with snow” – because it contains Mulhacén, the highest peak in mainland Spain, culminating at 3,479 meters (11,414 feet) above sea level, where you can ski in winter and beautiful hikes in summer, as well as many other activities .
