Pop Culture Weekly Digest 2/13/22
Sunday scares (i.e. celebrity social dumps)!
It was the Euphoria of Sundays and the Super Bowl of Sundays, which is to say, this week in pop culture has been chaotic as all hell. Here’s your recap of what you missed:
Fortunately (and unfortunately for some, depending on who you are), the Oscar talk officially began with the announcement of the nominations earlier this week. Some of the highlights include: a snub for Lady Gaga, a premiere for Kristen Stewart, and a Valentine-worthy nomination for power couple Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst.
Just a day earlier, rapper Eve and her husband, Maximillion Cooper, welcomed their first child, named Wilde Wolf Fife Alexander Somers Cooper. “Words cannot describe this feeling,” she wrote on Instagram.
Meanwhile, Shay Mitchell has announced that she is expecting her second child with partner Matte Babel. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she celebrated the pregnancy and mourned the recent loss of her grandmother. “Saying goodbye to a loved one while simultaneously experiencing the joy of welcoming another into this world is the great cycle of life,” she wrote.
In other baby news, Ashley Graham has shared the first photos and names of her and filmmaker hubby Justin Ervin’s twins, Malachi and Roman. “My boys have been the greatest teachers and the biggest reminders that I can do the hard things,” she wrote. “It hasn’t been easy, but it’s definitely worth it.” Her eldest son, Isaac, is 2 years old.
Speaking of the Olympics… after comedian Leslie Jones alleged that NBC was blocking and “fighting” his hugely popular live commentary videos about the Games, the network responded that it was the result of a “third-party error” which has since been “resolved.”
On the beef, Ye – who has been posting nonstop recently – called out Billie Eilish for allegedly dissing Travis Scott during a recent show, where she stopped by to help a viewer with asthma, saying, “I’m waiting for people to get well until I continue.” He demanded an apology and also threatened to pull out of Coachella, which the two are headlining. In response, she commented, “I literally never said anything about Travis. I was just helping out a fan.”
And, in other Ye news, the rapper and Julia Fox are reportedly breaking up their romance, despite the actor shutting down breakup rumours. The update comes amid Ye’s high-profile spat with Kim Kardashian, which in turn comes amid her high-profile plea to God to get them back together.
Additionally, Ye hinted that Pete Davidson should “thank” him for allowing him to “have” Kim in new song lyrics, which are all kinds of misogynistic and bizarre. He also launched a social media attack on Kid Cudi for being friends with Pete, and continued to berate the latter on social media.
Euphoria Stars Hunter Schafer and Dominic Fike’s romance isn’t just heating up on the small screen, it seems. The actor and the indie singer appear to be together, according to a kiss they recently shared on the latter’s Instagram story. The pair have been on Twitter for about a month now, dating back to when they were spotted leaving a restaurant holding hands.
Which brings me to… No. 1 Zendaya stan Tom Holland admitted he tried using a VPN to watch his best girl – his MJ, if you will – be amazing and talented on Euphoria while in Spain. Because what else would you expect from Tom? Euphoria settled 30 times” Holland? I love love, and I love them!
What about that episode Tom was trying to watch? After DARE – an anti-drug organization which itself does not have a great track record – criticized Euphoria for choosing to “wrongly glorify” drug use, Zendaya defended the show’s depiction of addiction, saying it’s “in no way a moral tale to teach people how to live their lives or what what they should do”.
Adele dazzled in her first red carpet appearance in years at the 2022 Brit Awards – and it wasn’t just her awards sweep or her beautiful Giorgio Armani dress that had people talking. The singer-songwriter also wore a large diamond ring, sparking engagement rumors to boyfriend Rich Paul.
Robert Pattinson Stans ate well this week: The Batman The star explicitly admitted for the first time that he casually lied in interviews “to say anything at all”. But we think his story of almost getting fired from dusk for wanting to make it “too emo” is definitely true.
In an interesting twist of events, Nick Cannon received a Magnum condom vending machine for Valentine’s Day. “Looks like someone just sent me an early Valentine’s Day gift!!” the comedian captioned his Instagram post. It remains to be seen whether he will actually use them!
After weeks of fan speculation, Ed Sheeran has revealed that he and Taylor Swift are reuniting to release a remix of his song “The Joker and the Queen.” The song, which he briefly teased on Instagram, was released this week.
