Is Marc Gasol retired? Ex-NBA star brings Girona back to Spanish First Division
NBA champion and Spanish basketball legend Marc Gasol led Basquet Girona to the LEB Oro title on Sunday night with a victory over Estudiantes. Gasol and Girona were promoted to the first division of Spanish basketball with the 66-60 victory.
Girona in the first division after only seven years
The 2019 NBA champion not only starts at center for the second division champions, but he is also the founder of the club. The club was founded in 2014 as a basketball academy for young children in the city of Girona, but in 2017, the Gasol and the club’s board created a senior team which would debut in the Spanish fourth division. In no time, Basquet Girona rose through the ranks of the country’s basketball and found themselves in the second division at the start of this season.
At the end of the last NBA season, Gasol parted ways with the Los Angeles Lakers and signed with the club he had founded seven years earlier. If his presence in the team has certainly made them candidates for the title, The Estudiantes were the big favorites at the start of the campaign.
Gasol: founder, center, MVP
After a fourth-place finish in the regular season, Girona managed to move past the quarters and the semi-final saw the favorites in the title game. Gasol and company had an 11-point lead going into the final quarter, but only scored 8 points in the final 10 minutes of the game. The defense tightened up in the final minutes of the game and Gasol’s 11 points and 8 rebounds were enough to earn him the MVP title and seal the victory to earn a promotion.
His contract expires at the end of this season, and it remains to be seen whether he will be back on the hardwood for his club’s maiden trip to Spain’s top league. If he decides to play for another year, I’m sure he won’t have too much trouble convincing the management.
