Fans attending MLB games this season will receive NFT tickets as a digital keepsake
MLB and Candy Digital will release commemorative NFT tickets for upcoming season games. Non-fungible tokens will not serve as a means of admission into a game, but rather as a digital keepsake for fans in a post-paper world.
“As tickets have increasingly become a digital product as opposed to a physical product, fans have lost that ability to collect a ticket stub as a memento of the game they attended or a memorable event that happened. is produced in a game,” MLB EVP of Business Development Kenny Gersh said Tuesday at league headquarters in midtown Manhattan. “We now offer a series of NFTs to represent these banknotes.”
Sales on Candy Digital of standard MLB game ticket NFTs will be limited to fans who have purchased tickets to attend the game affiliated with that NFT. Gersh expects the commemorative NFTs to sell for less than $10 and include a video of a memorable play from that ticket’s game. The NFL and Ticketmaster released commemorative NFT tickets to select regular season and postseason games last season, though these NFTs were limited to static images.
MLB NFT tickets will also feature that ticket’s seat number and the mention of a club sponsor in some cases. The New York Mets and San Francisco Giants are among 10 MLB clubs that will additionally offer subscription NFTs to their subscription holders. Free NFTs will be updated throughout the season with that team’s record and scores for each game.
MLB’s third NFT ticket offer will come in the form of game day giveaways. All 30 clubs will be able to offer commemorative two-game NFTs this season which Gersh likened to “the old bobblehead night”. Only fans in attendance at the ballpark will be eligible to receive the NFT themed for that game.
Besides Candy Digital’s digital trading cards and commemorative NFT tickets, Gersh also said that MLB values fan tokens and the space has “a lot of upside and potential.” European football teams NBANHL and NFL have partnered with Chiliz, the Malta-based developer of Socios fan token crypto assets that give fans access to exclusive rewards, surveys and other experiences.
“We’re looking closely at the fan token area, our marketing team is very focused on that in terms of fan loyalty, we have a whole working group on that internally,” Gersh said. “I think you’ll see more of that this year.”
