“A momentous occasion for the Basque Country” – The Spanish region will host the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2023

The Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2023 will take place in the Basque region of northern Spain.

With the Grand Départ 2022 in Denmark, it will be the second year in a row that the start of the most famous cycle race in the world will have an international flavor.

There will be three stages at the start in the region, with Stages 1 and 2 likely to attract interest from those battling for overall glory with steep climbs towards the finish.

The third stage, which will end in France, will probably be where the sprinters will test their legs.

“Cycling is a long-standing tradition in the Basque Country,” said Inigo Urkullu Renteria, President of the Basque Government. “Our goal is to organize a flawless Grand Départ to make our region an even more attractive destination. Our enthusiasm and commitment give us a raison d’être as we prepare to host the 110th edition of the Tour de France.

“July 2023 will be a great moment for the Basque Country. The fans will move out in force and reinforce the festive atmosphere that Basque supporters are known for on the roads of the Tour de France. The colorful Basque tide that fills the legendary mountains with joy sweep our own coasts, shores, towns and villages.”

The Tour de France first visited the Basque Country in 1949 and was there most recently for a time trial in 2018.

“A Grand Départ has become a big wish,” said race director Christian Prudhomme. “Since the Tour de France hit the roads in San Sebastian in the summer of 1992, the authorities and elected officials of the Basque Country have dreamed of hosting the Grande Boucle again.”
